Theresa called me on her way back from her appointment today (Thursday). She was in good spirits, as usual .
She got the staples out, which she was very happy about.
She also received the results of the biopsies that they did while in surgery. It turns out that the other small nodules they had found on her liver are carcinoid tumors as well. This wasn't surprising news to Theresa since she had been told this was more than likely. They also confirmed that she has Carcinoid Syndrome, which people with Carcinoid tumors sometimes get. This explains many of the unexplained problems that she's had for quite a while (remember - she may have had this for 5 to 10 years already).
They are able to treat the Carcinoid Syndrome with medication. Theresa currently has to give herself 3 shots per day. Eventually that will be lowered to 1 long-lasting shot per month which she'll recieve at the hospital. She'll have to stay on that medication for the rest of her life. I asked if the medication helped and she said that it definitely does.
Her next appointment is Tuesday. She'll should have a much better idea where she stands at that time. She knows that she'll have this cancer for a long time and that she'll have to undergo treatments and possibly another surgery a few years down the road. For the most part, people can live for a very long time with this, since it is slow growing. Every case is different though.
Kaeli is acting as Theresa's nurse and is making sure Theresa gives herself the shots.

Hey Theresa..I am so happy that you will be more comfortable now. What a long and difficult process. Are you still eating gluten free? I cannot wait to get together with you for a pitcher of Margaritas and a plate of messy nachos! xoxox Don't get hasty with yourself now that the staples are out. You still need a lot of R & R. Love ya!

Give Kurt and Kaeli our love and tell them we're glad that you're in such good hands.

Theresa,
ReplyDeleteHey girlie! We've been thinking of you so much!! And, we're so glad to hear that you are doing better. I bet it's such a wonderful relief to have those staples removed. Try not to worry too much about the cleaning or how the house may look at times - that stuff can wait. :o) And, try to take it easy on yourself, so that you can give yourself time to heal and recover. Thinking of you always! You are in our prayers! We love you and look forward to seeing you soon! xoxo :o)
Love,
Sandra, Brian, Wesley & Lucas
Theresa...So glad that you are home again, and now no staples. You sure do have a great support system! Gary and I went to Barbers for dinner tonight and Kelly (O'brien) Salamone and her husband were there. She said she had just written to you. All of Brockport is pulling for your quick recovery.
ReplyDeleteBest to you and your family.
Lori
