Theresa back from her appointment

Theresa called me on her way back from her appointment today (Thursday). She was in good spirits, as usual .

She got the staples out, which she was very happy about.

She also received the results of the biopsies that they did while in surgery. It turns out that the other small nodules they had found on her liver are carcinoid tumors as well. This wasn't surprising news to Theresa since she had been told this was more than likely. They also confirmed that she has Carcinoid Syndrome, which people with Carcinoid tumors sometimes get. This explains many of the unexplained problems that she's had for quite a while (remember - she may have had this for 5 to 10 years already).

They are able to treat the Carcinoid Syndrome with medication. Theresa currently has to give herself 3 shots per day. Eventually that will be lowered to 1 long-lasting shot per month which she'll recieve at the hospital. She'll have to stay on that medication for the rest of her life. I asked if the medication helped and she said that it definitely does.

Her next appointment is Tuesday. She'll should have a much better idea where she stands at that time. She knows that she'll have this cancer for a long time and that she'll have to undergo treatments and possibly another surgery a few years down the road. For the most part, people can live for a very long time with this, since it is slow growing. Every case is different though.

Kaeli is acting as Theresa's nurse and is making sure Theresa gives herself the shots.

Recovering at home

Theresa said she is a little sore today (Wednesday). They gave her clearance to do a little more around the house and she thinks she may have overdone it yesterday. Prior to that, she said she had been sleeping soundly through the night. Last night was a little painful, so she tossed and turned a lot. It is good news that she's able to do more and she that is recovering.

She gets the staples removed tomorrow. At that time, she'll get the results from the biopsies they did during surgery. She's very anxious to get those results. It has been difficult not knowing what the future holds. They haven't been able to give her any type of long term diagnosis yet, or tell her what her treatment will be like in the future.

Even though she'll get the results of the tests tomorrow, they won't be able to go into great detail. She has an appointment with her Oncologist next Tuesday. That's where she'll get a lot more information.

She says hi to everyone and once again thanks everyone for the constant support she's been getting. It means a lot to her.

Home again!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone out there! I am home and settling in again. I can't tell you how much all your posts, e-mails, cards, calls, prayers and facebook comments mean to me-the world. Thanks for keeping them coming. They keep me going and keep me from feeling lonely and from thinking too much about what is going on. I must admit that before the surgery I felt strong and wasn't feeling down. Now that that part is over, it is getting harder to keep my chin up all the time. Which is why all of your ways of reaching out to me mean a lot to me. They keep me going. Thank you for taking time each day for me. I can't wait until I am up to talking to each and everyone of you!
Here is what will happen next:
I have a doctor appointmenton Thursday. I will find out the results of the tests run after my surgery and I will be getting my many staples out!

I will let you know how all that goes! Thanks for being my cheerleaders!

Much love, Theresa

Theresa headed home again

Theresa will be heading home again today (Sunday) around 3:30 or so. She's feeling much better now.

The doctors thing they know what is going on with her and they've set up a treatment plan for her. It turns out that it wasn't the type of infection that Dan mentioned in the last post.

She didn't have a computer, so she hasn't been able to check this web site for the past couple of days. She'll also have access to her phone, so people should be able to get in touch with her now.

Infection

The doctors believe Theresa has a bacterial infection (tests are being performed to confirm this). She has been isolated and has a room overlooking Boston all to herself. The IV fluids have been a big help and have actually reduced her pain levels. She's been able to cut back on the amount of pain medicine. However, she hasn't had anything to eat yet. They'll give that a try tonight.

Overall, Theresa is in good hands and is resting up. Our Mom is visiting and Kaeli is having a blast spending time with her Grandma Corbin.

One important note: Theresa's cell phone is dead and she doesn't have the charger. She just wanted people to know in case they've called and not heard back from her.

The hope is she'll be released tomorrow and can continue her recovery at home.

- Dan

Still in the hospital

A quick update on Theresa's current condition. She has been admitted to the hospital. A CT scan was performed last night and the results were encouraging. There's some fluid in the liver but is not a major concern of the doctors. They're confident there's no infection since she's not running a fever and her white blood cell count is right where it should be. However, she's still nauseous and unable to eat. She's getting fluids and hopefully will check out of the hospital tomorrow. Resting at home, doing her exercises, and being with family is the best thing for her recovery.

Speaking with Theresa I could tell she was very tired. She sounded wiped out but feels better than she did last night. The nurses have done a great job of making her comfortable.

Theresa back in the hospital

Theresa is back at Brigham and Women's hospital tonight. She said that she wasn't feeling great from the time she woke up this morning (Friday morning). She was feeling nauseous and was having stomach issues all day. She called her doctor and they told her to come in.

They are going to do another CT scan to make sure that everything is healing properly.

When I spoke with her she sounded frustrated and like she was in pain, but they had hooked her IV up again and she said that the medicine was starting to help.

I'll post more information when I have it. She assumed that she'd be staying over night tonight and she was looking forward to that since the doctors and nurses are so good there.

Settling in at home

Theresa asked me to post another update for her. She said it is difficult to post updates herself due to the medication. It makes her drowsy and she has a hard time focusing. She did say that once she is feeling a little more normal, she'll start making updates herself.

Right now she is settling in at home. Kurt set her up with a recliner in the living room where she can watch her new TV. She said she watched the season premiere of Lost last night. I asked her to give me a recap of the show (which I had watched as well) to see how groggy she really was. That wasn't really fair. If you watch the show, you know how confusing it can be even if you aren't on painkillers. She actually remembered quite a bit, but she's going to watch it again since she has it on Tivo.

She said it is hard to be at home and not do anything. So far, she has only walked around the halls for exercise since it is so cold and icy outside. She is only allowed to walk up and down the stairs once per day, so she only goes upstairs when it is time to go to bed.

A nurse stops by every day to check in on her and she also had two "babysitters" - Tori and Sophia Gibbs to keep her company and help around the house.

Keep the comments coming. Theresa said they make a huge difference in her day.

Theresa is headed home!

I just got off of the phone with Theresa. She was preparing for her ride home when I called. It sounds like she is doing MUCH better than she had been over the past few days. She said that the pain is still there, but it is "more than manageable".

She has orders from the doctor to take it easy (for the most part). She is not supposed to do anything like laundry, cooking, etc by herself. But - she does have to get up and walk as much as she can. That will help to promote healing and it will help get her digestive system back to normal.

Our mom will be arriving tomorrow, so she'll be able to help out quite a bit with the household stuff, and I know Theresa has a lot of great neighbors that will be helping out as well.

Tired But Feeling Better

I spoke with Theresa this evening. She's still uncomfortable and in pain but it's better than before. The doctors came up with a drug cocktail that works (somewhat). The reality is the pain won't completely subside until she's fully recovered. Right now the pain ranges from a 5 to a 10. The hope is that it stays closer to a 5.

The good news: she's leaving the hospital tomorrow around 11:00 AM! Theresa then has 8 weeks of recovery. Next week she has an appointment with her surgeon and carcinoid specialist. The results from the labs will be back and they'll know the nature of the nodules found while removing the main tumor. Once they have the biopsy reports they can chart the proper course of action.

- Dan

Without you...

Yes, I am talking to you! (Now, imagine a finger pointing directly at you).

Without you, the past 18 days of my life would have been a scary and dark place.

Instead I've been in a calm and supported quiet place where worries do not take over. Yes, they have been there, but you have kept them in their place and it has been such a blessing. You have believed in me and that has made me stronger.

There are so many of you! I can't get over how many of you have reached out to me, even if you haven't seen me in a while. I have forever been touched with your kindness, generosity and faith and the way that you have reached out to others, asking them to pray for me. I can feel all your prayers and they are working!

I wish I could contact each and every one of you in person right now and give you a big hug and kiss. Since I can't, please, for now, let this post be your hug and kiss. Know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers and that I will never forget how you've helped me through this very rough time. I love you all and will pray for you and your families. And know, that if you ever need me, for anything, I will be there for you!

I look forward to going through my recovery with you! Thanks again for being there for me! Much love, Theresa

Rough night

Theresa had a rough night last night. As Dan had mentioned, they took her off of the IV and that led to a lot of pain. Eventually they put her back onto the IV at around 9pm. For the next 3 hours Theresa kept pressing the button that administers the medication, but she didn't feel any relief from the pain. Finally they figured out that there was a problem with the machine and she hadn't been getting any medication over those 3 hours.

They fixed that and the medication helped to dull the pain. Still, she had a lot of trouble falling asleep, and didn't doze off until 3am. The doctors woke her up at 6:30am to discuss her pain situation. They then decided to take her off of the IV again and administer the same medication orally in hopes that the pain would be manageable without an IV. That would lead to Theresa being able to go home.

After taking the oral medication Theresa started experiencing dizziness and nausea. That eventually led to her throwing up.

The nurses had been prepping her to go home, but once she threw up they said that she would have to stay a little longer.

One thing that Theresa made clear when I spoke to her was that she has no interest in going home right now. She feels like that would be rushing things, and that she'd most likely be very uncomfortable there.

She was pretty tired when we spoke (at around 2pm) and she was going to try and get some rest.

Worst Day Yet

Theresa just called with another update. She's still in a lot of pain. In fact, this has been her worst day yet. None of the oral medicines (all opiates) eased the pain so they hooked her back up on an IV. She's now dispensing the pain medicine herself. She can press the magic button every seven minutes which is exactly what she's been doing for the past two hours. Unfortunately, it hasn't done the trick.

While the day has been particularly difficult, she said the nurses and doctors have been great. They are very attentive and the doctors have been in constant communication with Theresa and each other. The doctors had planned to remove her epidural (it's still in but not being used) but they didn't. If Theresa doesn't show signs of improvement they'll again use it to administer the medicine.

There isn't much Theresa can do to help the situation. She has been following all the doctor's orders and doing all her exercises. It's all surgical pain and the amount of pain experienced varies from person to person.

Please keep up those prayers. Theresa could really use all your thoughts, support, and positive messages.

- Dan

Transition Day

I just got off the phone with Theresa. Things have shifted quite a bit since her post earlier today. She was doing so well the doctors removed the epidural and took her off the IV pain meds with the hope of her leaving the hospital tomorrow. The problem is they haven't found an oral medicine that can manage the pain. Theresa is in quite a bit of agony and discomfort - the most since her operation. She's shaking a lot and just talking with her I could tell she was extremely uncomfortable.

Theresa asked for everyone to keep her in your prayers as the doctors work to resolve the issue. At UMass Hospital she was forced to remain there because the oral pain medicines were ineffective. Hopefully, this time they'll find a prescription that will allow her to finally get back home. The doctor called this a "transition day". If her body responds to new pain medicine she'll be able to go home. Otherwise, she'll be put back on stronger meds and remain in the hospital a bit longer.

Some exciting news!

Hi Everyone!
I am in the middle of working on the "Tidbits of information' post I started yesterday, it will be a good one!
However I got some good news that I wanted to share with you right away!

First of all, I have my license to drive!, so I am wheeling around the 7th floor with my IV pole, filled with pain meds, antibiotics, and my foley bag (my peeps!)
They also took me off the IV liquids because I was "peeing like a champ!" (the doctor's exact words) Don't worry Pete, I am staying below the speed limit.

Then this morning I got the news that they will be removing the epidural, the Peeps bag, and the IV pain Meds! I wil soon be free and not be attached to a pole for much longer! I can then ditch this lovely gown and get into an old pair of worn in sweats!

Play by play-They have just removed the pain medicine and have disconnected the epidural. Now I have to take a pain pill to see what I'll need when they send me home! Pray that it works. I'd rather be here in no pain than at home in pain. They are leaving my "peeps" bag in for a while, it will probably come out tonight. I am all numb in my abdomen and if they take it out now I'll wet myself! I'll pass on that experience!
I am also allowed to eat real food today! No more clear liquids! Yeah!
Finally the big news! Since I am "passing gas" they said I may be able to gohome tomorrow! Thank you all for being there for me when I needed it most! I appreciate everything! Love, Theresa

A beautiful snowy day

Good morning everyone!

Up and running the halls! :-)

Actually, that is a goal. Right now I am shuffling the halls. I will ask you now to please excuse my writing and spelling. no more caps it is just easier. I am using my friend Christy's laptop and my fingers are hitting all these extra keys. If I fix stuff, I'll never get this done. My last entry said I was sitting in a chair and was supposed to say more but I don't know what happened! My eye sight is also blurry from the pain meds.

As I said before, I am so blessed to have such wonderful, caring and supportive friends and family! I am so very touched by the time you have taken from your busy lives to write and call me. Every kind word, gesture, call, prayer, card etc. has lifted my spirit!!!! If you told me that I'd have this type of strength and courage I'm not sure I would have believed it. It just all clicked when I needed it! Having your well wishes here on the blog give keep my spirits!!

Mike Kristin and kids are here. I had Kissy (Auntie Kristin) do some typing and editing for me. When they arrived I was in a great deal of pain. I guess the anesthesia was wearing off. Not a good thing. It was scary but we called the pain management team and they adjusted my pain killers. Boy do I feel better. I got to see my incision today. I have at least 40 staples keeping me together and the incision is from my breast bone to down under my belly button. (Many of you have asked, sorry to those who find this to be too much information.)

Things at the hospital are kind of strange, everyone wants to know all about your gas! Have you passed any, if so, how much, do you have a lot of gas in your tummy? My first graders would really get a kick out of these types of questions and to be honest Kurt and Kaeli would too!

I am going to try to sleep now. I will update you again tomorrow, however my surgeon is not here this weekend. I do not know if I'll find out the answers to all my burning questions- When do the staples come out, how long will I be out of work, When do I find out about the other tumors they found on the liver and uterus? Once I know these answers, I'll pass them along.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you have done for me, for giving me the courage to keep on keeping on! Until tomorrow!!!!!

I am up sitting in a chair

Message from Theresa

[Theresa left this note in the comments but I'm posting to make sure everyone sees it. -Dan]

Thanks everyone! You are all amazing people and I know that I am doing as well as I am mentally, emotionally and physically because of all your prayers, well wishes, notes, cards, and the list goes on. I feel like I am some famous person who is about to go up to the podium and thank all the people who got me through this! It sincerely because of you all.

The only thing I really even worried about going into this was, the fact that I really wasn't worried! I spent 9 months being worried about labor-no lie, I was scared everyday-about pain, needles, and everything else. This time I was surprisingly calm. It was like you all had your arms wrapped around me, that is really what it felt like as the doctor started putting the epidural in my back.

I am so happy to finally get the chance to let you know how very much you, my friends and family mean to be. I am the luckiest person in the world to have you all in my life. As I recuperate, I will write more. Now I am off to take my first walk since the surgery. And Petey, do not worry I will listen to all the doctor's orders! ;-)

Lots of love to you all!

Theresa

Theresa doing well

I spoke with Theresa late last night and she remains very positive and upbeat. I always feel a lot less stressed out after speaking with her. I think she's actually handling all of this a lot better than I am :) I have a feeling her recovery time is going to be quicker than the average person because she seems eager to get up and around and out of bed already.

Theresa is out of recovery and back in her room

Kurt called to say that Theresa is out of recovery and she is back in her room. She is on pretty strong pain medication, but she is able to communicate a little bit. For the most part, she is resting though.
-Mike

Quick note

A lot of people are thanking me for setting up this web site. Dan actually created the site. I've been posting updates because I live the closest to Theresa and Kurt has been giving updates to me so that I can pass them along.

Also - I'm trying to pass the information along as accurately as I can, but honestly, some information is probably lost as it passes from the doctor, to Kurt, to me, and then the web site. I'm still not sure where exactly Theresa stands based on what they found today. They haven't come right out and given her a very bad prognoses (nor have they given her a very good one). At least that is my interpretation after talking with Kurt. I think a lot of it is still up in the air.

-Mike

Theresa out of surgery and recovering

I just spoke with Kurt.

Theresa is out of surgery and is in the recovery room.

The surgeon told Kurt that the cancer had started in her small intestine and then spread to the outside (which is not unusual with carcinoid tumors), so the removed 2 ½ feet of intestine along with the tumor. That might sound like a lot, but you have 22 feet of intestine, and the surgeon said that this would not cause long term problems for Theresa and he seemed very unconcerned with that aspect of the surgery. He said that he usually has to remove much more. She should be able to eat and digest food normally in the future, etc.

While looking in other areas they found several small nodules on her liver and her uterus as well. They took biopsies of these and they will have them tested to see if they are Carcinoid tumors or not. He didn’t think it would be good to remove them during the surgery, because they did not know what they were, so there is no reason to strain her body any more than necessary. Even if they do come back as being carcinoid tumors, they probably won’t go back in and operate any time soon. The doctor said that this is a very slow growing cancer and that Theresa probably has had it for 5 or 10 years already. He said that people can live with this type of cancer for their entire life and live pretty normally, but they need to be monitored regularly and possibly have medication, or another surgery down the road. They typically don't use chemotherapy or radiation against this type of cancer because of how slow it grows. Apparently those work better against cancers that spread more rapidly.

It may take a week or two for the results to come back from these biopsies. Once that happens, they’ll develop a game plan for the future.

From a surgical standpoint, the surgery went well. There were no complications or anything like that. She'll be in the hospital for at least 5 days to recover before they send her home, where she will continue to rest and recover.

This isn’t the best possible news, but it certainly isn’t the worst.

That’s all I know for now. I wish I had more details to share. I think that the removal of the main tumor is going to have a very positive effect on Theresa (it was causing considerable pain) and that once she recovers from the surgery she'll be up and around again. If she has survived 5 or 10 years with no treatment, I feel pretty good about her chances now that she's had the main tumor removed and that she is being cared for by world class experts.

Encouraging news prior to surgery

Theresa was just going in for another CT scan when I was leaving the hospital at around 4pm. Kurt called me at about 6:30 and gave me an update based on the results of that scan. The doctors seem fairly confident that the cancer has NOT spread. They expected that it may have spread from the outside of her intestine into her small intestine, but they didn't see anything in her intestines on the scan. So that is encouraging news. They may only have to remove the one tumor.

They are still going to carefully inspect the small intestine (and other areas) during surgery because not everything shows up on the scans.

Another concern with Carcinoid tumors is having it spread to the liver. They also seem to be fairly confident that that hasn't happened either.

From what I saw, and after speaking with Kurt and Theresa, Brigham and Women's deserves the excellent reputation that they have. I feel that she is in very good hands right now.

I'll update this page tomorrow, as soon as I get an update from Kurt on how the surgery went.

- Mike

At the hospital - Wednesday afternoon

I'm in Theresa's hospital room now. She just found out that her surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday the 15th) at 7:30 am. It will last for between 1 and 5 hours.

She has a CT scan scheduled for today, so right now she's busy drinking a (apparently very disgusting) liquid that is necessary for that procedure.

Theresa says that she is very touched by all of the posts on the web site (which she has finally seen) and all of the calls and cards she's received. It has made a big difference for her. She says to keep her in your prayers and thoughts tomorrow morning.

It has been nice visiting with her. She seems like her normal self despite everything that is happening right now.

- Mike

Surgery has been scheduled

I spoke with Theresa first thing this morning (Wednesday the 14th) and she told me that her surgery has been scheduled for tomorrow. She didn't know the exact time.

She was very impressed with her doctor (surgeon) at Brigham and Women's Hospital. She said he was very professional and really took the time to get to know her, explain things to her and answer her questions. He has decided to go ahead with the surgery before doing the full body scan that I've mentioned several times. He said that the best way to know where the cancer is is to actually look while doing surgery. He feels, based on his experience, that he has a good idea of what he'll find.

So far, the doctors haven't come out and told Theresa what her chances of beating this are. Based on the conversation that I had with Theresa this morning and the information that she relayed to me from her doctor, I feel confident that she can beat this. BUT - They still don't know the full extent of what she is up against. I'm sure they'll have a very good idea after the surgery.

I'll be going to visit her today during lunch. I'll post another update after that.

Theresa will have a computer today too - so she'll be able to read the comments left for her and she'll be able to post messages of her own.

Brigham and Women's Hospital

Theresa has been transferred to Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She is located on floor 7A, room 11, bed #2 in case you want to visit or send something to her.

She sounded a little bit tired when I spoke to her. I think being in the hospital for this long, and after all of the waiting (and waiting and waiting), it's all catching up with her a little bit.

- Mike
Theresa - here's a message from Caden and Delaney. They can't wait to come and visit you.

video

Tuesday update

I spoke with Theresa briefly at 9:30 this morning. She is still waiting to be transferred to Brigham and Women's hospital. They have already accepted her as a patient, but they are waiting for a bed to open up.

Theresa said she had a poor night of sleep last night. The tumor causes quite a bit of pain, so she's been on pain medication for the duration of her stay. She was nodding off as I was talking to her on the phone, so hopefully she's resting now.

Message for Aunt Theresa

video

Here's a quick clip of Theresa's goddaughter Mia saying hello to her Aunt Theresa (or Aunt Ta Ta as she's more commonly known). She's wearing the polka-dotted pants Theresa gave us.

Here's Theresa and Kurt's daughter Kaeli with her cousin Caden (Mike's oldest).

Mia LOVED spending time with her Aunt Theresa when we all visited Brockport over Thanksgiving.

If you have any pictures or videos you like to share we'd be happy to load them. You can send them to me at Dan.Corbin [at] gmail.com.

Monday update

I just spoke with Theresa. She continues to be very positive and she wanted me to pass along a message to everyone that has called her or left her a message on this site. She said that all of the support she has gotten had made it much easier for her to remain positive and she passes along a heartfelt thank you. She hasn't been able to get online yet, so she had Kurt print out all of the messages that have been left on this site.

I should have a laptop for her by tomorrow. Assuming she has internet access at Brigham and Women's hospital, she'll be able to get online and post updates to this site herself.

Not much has changed since my last update. She is waiting to be transferred from UMass Memorial (I mistakenly said she was at UMass General in my last post) to Brigham and Women's hospital. Hopefully that will happen today.

They'll be performing a full body scan at B&W and that will give the doctors a much clearer picture of the spread (if any) of the cancer. Sometime after that they'll perform surgery.

So - she's just doing the same thing she's been doing for most of the time while in the hospital - which is wait.

Also - If you know anyone that is having trouble reaching this web site, have them try this address, which should work:

theresagusek.blogspot.com

-Mike

PS - Everyone has been asking how they can help. For now, continue to pray and channel positive energy towards Theresa. We'll be adding a section to this site where we'll let you know if she needs anything specific. For example, I know she went WAY over her cell phone minutes after being on the phone non stop for the past week. She racked up a huge bill. Maybe we'll take up a collection for that. More on that later. Going forward, I know she has switched to an unlimited plan, because that will be her primary method of contacting friends and family.

Also - you can email her at mybabykeg@yahoo.com

Carcinoid Tumor

The very quick update is this - Theresa has been diagnosed with having a carcinoid tumor, which is attached to the outside of her large intestine. You can find out more about carcinoid tumors here:

http://www.caringforcarcinoid.org/carcinoid/aboutcarcinoid.asp

At this point, Theresa is awaiting further tests to see if the cancer has spread at all. So far, they've only identified the one tumor.

I've spoken to Theresa many times and right now she is very upbeat and positive. She's also very tough (as you know) and we have no doubt that she'll be tenacious in her fight against this disease and that she'll win the fight.

She is at UMass General hospital now, but she'll be transferring to Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston early next week (that is the plan as of now, anyway). She'll also be seeing a specialist from the Dana Farber Institute, so she'll be getting treatment from some of the best doctors in the world.

Dan and I will be expanding this web site in the coming days, so check in often for the latest information. Also - feel free to forward this page on to anyone that you feel might want to know.

-Mike

Let's get this started...

In order to make it easier for Theresa to communicate the latest news and for others to easily track her progress we've created this here blog.
